Pen and Ink with Watercolour – for beginners and intermediate

Learn to draw and paint using pen and ink with watercolour washes.

Course overview

This class is great for beginners, and also those with some experience who want to expand their skills in drawing and painting in watercolour.

Using a variety of pens and inks (soluble and permanent), students will learn different sketching techniques to draw a wide range of subjects. Watercolour can then be added to add colour and atmosphere. We will cover subjects from still life, landscapes, animals, people, figures and more. Bring along your own favourite subject reference to work on or use the reference material supplied.

Materials List

  • Sketchbook, 2b pencil and kneadable eraser, sharpener
  • Archers 185g medium watercolour paper
  • Indian ink
  • Simple dip pen and nib
  • Fountain pen (with cartridges – this will be water soluble ink)
  • Fine line black pen (Permanent) 0.5/0.7mm
  • Small container for ink (eg very small jam jar)
  • Watercolour paints such as Windsor & Newton, Art Spectrum. In 5ml tubes. Windsor & Newton Cotman student grade are fine to start with:
  • Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium red), Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber

This is a basic set of warm/cool colours with 2 earth colours.

If you already have watercolour paints bring what you have.

  • A palette will also be needed if using tube paints (as opposed to a portable pan set). A fold up type is recommended because it can be transported more easily as the paints can be left to dry without the need for cleaning after each use.
  • Brushes: synthetic watercolour brushes are fine: size 4, 8 and 12
  • Water container. Round plastic take away containers are ideal
  • A roll of kitchen roll absorbent paper
  • Rag
