APT1 – Create with Clay – Tuesdays @ 1:30pm / Anne Cutajar

Adult’s Create with Clay (8 Week Workshop for Adults)
Join Anne Cutajar for 8 weeks of hand-building with clay. Suitable for beginners, this workshop will guide participants through various hand-building and surface decoration techniques. If you would like to relax and work on your own projects, follow our hands-on lesson plans or even try the wheel, this class is perfect for you!

$25 cash glaze and firing fee due week 3

Tuesdays 1:30 -3:30 pm

SUPPLIES: Students need to supply the following tools and clay for the term:

1 x 10 kg bag white Earthenware clay – This is a good clay to start with for hand building and throwing. Only bring a quarter of the bag at a time wrapped in a plastic bag.

A set of basic tools including a sponge. Basic tools can be purchased in a set.

An apron and closed in shoes. Towel and large freezer bags.

A firing and glazing fee of $25 in week 3 to cover use of centre glazes and kiln.

ADULTS

Week Adult Clay: Adults do not have to follow lesson plan if they choose to focus more on a particular project in plan or even a project of their own.

1: Pinch Pot

Introduction:
– Treatment of material, kneading clay, drying clay, slip making, glazing (underglaze,

glaze), recycling clay, safety. – Housekeeping

 

Activity: Make a bird (or whale)
Building techniques: Pinch method
Surface techniques: Score and slip, attach wings and tail using slabs made with rolling pin

2: Double Pinch Pot

Activity: Make double pinch pot sculptures (these can be owls, faces, fish, etc) Building techniques: Pinch method
Surface techniques: Score and slip, slip trail

Other techniques: Making and attaching pieces from hand rolled coils and rolling pin made slabs (legs, wings, etc)

3: Coil

Activity: Make a coil vessel
Building techniques: Coil method
Other techniques: make and attach a handle (demonstrate coil technique and handle pulling technique)

4: Combo hand building

Activity: Make pieces for a wall hanging/jewellery, etc
 Building techniques: Coil method, slab method
 Surface techniques: Score and slip, slip trail, stamps Other techniques: Use a slab roller

5: Slab

Activity: Make a slab form (cup, bottle, etc)
Building techniques: Slab
Surface techniques: Score and slip, stamping with lace, etc

Other techniques: Using a plaster mould, use a slab roller

Note: Ensure all pieces made previous to today is fired in time for week 7.

6: Slab

7: Underglazing

Activity: Use underglaze to paint bisqueware

Week

8: Complete Underglazing & Wheel Introduction

Activity 1: Continue using underglaze and glaze to paint bisqueware

Activity 2: Intro to the wheel (this will encourage participants to book a wheel throwing class in the future)


Note: Brush on clear glaze on sgraffito work from week 6.
